History

The government district of Posen was established in 1815 in the Prussian province of Posen Grand Duchy. It included the southern part of the province, and had at its foundation an area of ​​17,839 km ². The seat of the provincial government was located in Poznan. The population of the administrative district was majority polnischsprachig. The poses province belonged since 1871 to the German Empire. After the end of World War I, the majority of the administrative district under the provisions of the Versailles peace treaty with Poland had to be ceded.
