The Fleet School " Walter Steffens " in Parow was the training of Maaten ( NCOs ) and enlisted men ( teams) of the People's Navy of the GDR. It was founded in 1950 as Seepolizeischule Parow and renamed on 1 December 1970 in Fleet School Walter Steffens. She insisted until reunification in 1990. Starting from 1992 began on its premises the establishment of marine engineering school of the German Navy.

History

On March 1, 1950 Walter Steffens was commissioned a Seepolizeischule on a former Seefliegerhorst in Parow build. The arrival of the first recruits on August 1, 1950 marked the official opening date. Walter Steffens, with the rank of maritime police inspector, was the first head of the institution.

Training

Was formed in 1970 in various disciplines for:

  • Seamanship and weapons technology careers
  • Radio and radio- technical careers
  • Machinery and technical careers
  • Higher education for student officer of the Navy (possibly for a later study at a high school officer of the GDR )

During the period of Maat or sub-leaders training the concerned soldiers wore the rank Maatschüler (OR -3).

Duration of training

The training times were for six sailors and petty officers for 10 months. As of 1984, the training periods were shortened by two months. The army school, Walter Steffens and its predecessor the Seepolizeischule, formed between 1950 and 1990 from all enlisted men and officers of the People's Navy.

The fleet school was not taken with command 96/90 the Chief of the People's Navy on 3 October 1990 in the German army and thus de facto dissolved. The area is used by the naval engineering school since 1992.
