Folding door

A folding door is a door made from multiple parts that fold up when opened. Design variants are accordion door and roller shutter door.

Design principle

A folding door consists of individual sheets which are laterally hinged, joints or hinge straps together to form the movable members, the door.

As with all sliding two design principles are:

Designs

According to EN 1527:1998 fittings for sliding doors and folding doors featuring a folding door to paragraph 8 Type of doors:

  • Class 2 = folding door (2 -leaf)
  • Class 3 = multi-leaf folding door

Folding doors can be divided into three groups:

The opening and closing can be done manually or by actuators (electric, hydraulic or pneumatic). For locking and unlocking provide special rates of Falttürbeschlägen, which also heat-and wind-resistant construction methods.

Areas of application

  • Folding doors are particularly suitable for spatially confined situations in which a full wing can not open, interfere with or at risk. The leaf width can be chosen to be very small. Even with normal wing measurements between 700 and 900 mm above the floor protrude Folding doors only slightly.
  • Folding doors allow large passage widths. With several fields can cover large areas. Therefore, folding doors are about to porches and entrances to conservatories, or as a room divider for conference rooms and halls in the hotel, hospitality and event industry.
  • Folding doors have no explicit list. Therefore, they are used for example in public transport (tram, trolleybus, bus ) - where the door use the driver usually has no direct line of sight to the door - because the risk of entrapment of a passenger is comparatively low.
  • All three benefits they draw particular for garage doors or lift wells. By a suitable roll and Führapperate gates are also possible in huge proportions, eg for construction halls in aircraft and shipbuilding or for hangars

The advantage of the folding door to a sliding door is that the sliding door at least one full sheet width required lateral space, while the folding doors optimally reduced to a measure leaf thickness × number of sheets.

Folding doors of lightweight construction and good rolling bearings open with little effort. A disadvantage is the relatively slow opening process. Therefore, folding doors are of all types for escape routes not allowed. Fire resistant design is possible.

In furniture, they are particularly at secretaries to find chests of drawers and other Galanteriemöbeln. They are constructed in the traditional craft some with piano hinge, but partly also of narrow strips which are mounted on a fabric. This is possible folding doors in the tightest radii.

History

Already the Romans knew folding doors, have as excavations at Pompeii (Italy ) are shown.

Standardize

Construction in general:
