Folle Blanche

Folle Blanche is a white grape variety. She was formerly widely used in France on the Atlantic coast. She is a very old variety of the Charente.

Prior to infestation by phylloxera, the variety was used primarily as a more acidic base wine for distillation of Cognac and the clone Picpoule for the Armagnac and is still true today than that for the spirits extraction the most suitable variety. Its leading position as the main grape of Cognac ( today about 300 hectares of vineyards ) this variety has now lost to the Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche since revenues from the much lower and it is also more susceptible to illness. A study published in 2007 study shows that the grape Folle Blanche is genetically related to the grape Blanc lady.

Most of the area under their vineyards located on the Loire in the area of Nantes ( in 2007 it was raised in France 1,848 hectares of vines cultivated, source ONIVINS ). This is called the acid-rich variety and Gros Plant and the popular wine is marketed under the appellation Gros Plant du Pays Nantais. The best clones are the numbers 281, 280, 559 and 563
