Fondation Maeght

The Fondation Marguerite et Aimé Maeght is a private museum with sculpture garden and exhibition organizers modern and contemporary art at Saint -Paul -de- Vence on the hill La Colline des Gardettes, about 25 km from Nice. The address is 623, chemin des Gardettes, 06570 Saint -Paul -de- Vence.

Description

The couple Marguerite and Aimé Maeght founded the foundation in 1964 to showcase some of his collection there. The Catalan architect Josep Lluís Sert created in collaboration with famous artists such as Joan Miró and Georges Braque a building ensemble consisting of two houses separated by a courtyard, and from the little chapel of St. Bernard, which is reminiscent of the early 1953 deceased son Bernard. The ensemble blends harmoniously into the Mediterranean landscape. The opening took place on July 28, 1964 by the then Minister of Culture of France, André Malraux.

In addition to the important collection of modern art paintings are in the gardens of the Fondation Maeght many sculptures, sculptures, installations and mosaics great contemporary artists, such as the labyrinth, a ceramic wall and sculptures by Miró. From the café you look at the yard with the typical elongated figures of Alberto Giacometti. The interior of the "Café Diego " was designed by his brother Diego Giacometti. The Foundation has an impressive number of masterpieces, among which are 52 sculptures by Alberto Giacometti, over 150 works of Joan Miró and works by Pierre Bonnard, Alexander Calder, Fernand Léger, Marc Chagall, Wassily Kandinsky, Henri Matisse, Jesús Rafael Soto and Antoni Tàpies. The collection of over 12,000 works and the thematic exhibitions or retrospectives organized by the Fondation annually have more than 200,000 visitors from around the world.

The integrated library is open to the public daily, it offers more than 30,000 volumes on the modern and contemporary art.

Director was 1969-2004 Jean Louis Prat, one of the major international Chagall experts and Chairman of the " Comité Marc Chagall " in Paris. The President of the Foundation, Adrien Maeght, announced in May 2011 that Olivier Kaeppelin would take up the post of Director in July 2011.
