Fontana della Barcaccia

The Fontana della Barcaccia, ( German Barcaccia Fountain ), is a baroque fountain in Rome. It is situated on the Piazza di Spagna in front of the Spanish Steps.

The Fontana della Barcaccia was in the years 1627 (or 1628) to 1629 by Pietro Bernini, father of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, built at the request of Pope Urban VIII. The name Barcaccia ( barge ) is derived from the shape of a half- inclined ship. The fountain should remember a flood disaster in 1598, during which the place was flooded and a boat to be stranded here.

The fountain is supplied by the Aqua Virgo with water.
