Concept

The name of the distribution comes from the fact that Foresight (English to German " look into the future " or " foresight " ) wants to show will be in future to find the technologies that are still in development at the moment in other distributions. For this, the corresponding latest versions of software packages are used, often beta or even alpha versions. This has the result that the user does have the neuestmöglichste software, the stability of the system, however, suffers.

For example, are relatively new programs such as the Beagle desktop search, Compiz, the Zeroconf implementation Avahi or HAL / D-Bus has long been a standard part of the distribution, often before other distributions. Otherwise, the functional requirements on a normal user -oriented; on the two CDs ( or DVD) are, for example, OpenOffice.org ( the only graphics program which is not based on GTK ) and various codecs for multimedia formats, but not programming tools. Because the objective of Foresight Linux that showcase each current GNOME version, not even Mozilla Firefox is installed, but the GNOME web browser Epiphany own.

Foresight Linux uses the Linux developed by rPath Conary package management software. A special feature of Conary is that it with an update a package only the changed data of the new package version downloads and not the entire package. This behavior on the one hand, the bandwidth is reduced and on the other hand, the required update time. In addition, updates can be undone easily.

Foresight Linux is from the distribution rPath Linux (then SpeciFix Linux) emerged from the Conary also derived. The beginnings of the distribution are not well documented, Distrowatch leads as the oldest message is a version 0.6 in March 2005.
