Avahi (Software)

Avahi is a free implementation of Zeroconf, a technique used to connect devices in a local network, without requiring them to be manually configured.

History

Avahi was developed by Lennart Poettering and Trent Lloyd. It is the result in 2005 of merging the original mDNS-/DNS-SD-Implementierung of Poettering called FlexMDNS and Lloyds original code called Avahi. While the majority of today's codes from the FlexMDNS project came about, Avahi was the name for the joint project. The initial development of FlexMDNS had begun in late 2004, the work on the original Avahi early 2004.

Avahi was originally developed under the auspices of freedesktop.org, but has now developed into an independent project.

The name refers to the Avahi Wollmakis, a genus of primates that are native to Madagascar. Trent Lloyd put his name. The Woolly Lemur is also the basis for the logo.
