Forest of Equilibrium

Forest of Equilibrium is the debut album by British doom metal band Cathedral. It was published by the label Earache Records in 1991 and is considered a classic of the genre.

History

Singer Lee Dorrian, recently still active with Napalm Death, continuously urged as early as the samples that the band play slower. But remained instrumental references to the Grindcore recognizable by the band whose typical guitar sounds " slowed to a nearly unbearable pace ."

At the same time also Dorrian itself was in terms of his singing in a stylistic transition. In order to change, he was based in part to Michael Gira of the Swans and the other to Messiah Marcolin, many years at Candlemass and at the time of the Swedish doom metal band Stillborn, according to Birch Meier a balancing act of " singing with a touch death -like harmony and the ejection growls ".

The sound quality of the recording is poor, but it is also a part of " dark " quality.

In 2011, the band released the album under the title " Anniversary" as a live - new recording of a concert in 2010.

Cover

The cover is by Dave Patchett, who was exhibiting at the time in Coventry in a gallery. Dorrian liked the pictures and he got in touch with Patchett on who lived surprisingly in his neighborhood. After some discussion Patchett took the job and worked out on the basis of specifications Dorrians the painting. Conspicuous in particular the references to Hieronymus Bosch.

Reception

From Piero Scaruffi Forest of Equilibrium in a list of the best metal albums at No. 12, Jose Carlos Santos wrote of a " classic of classics, trend-setting for Doom Metal as equally ".
