A school class (short, in the school context: class ) refers to a specified group of students who attend the classes together in a school or grade level ( in Austria: School level), in which there are the students. A Year at a school is usually performed in several parallel classes. Formation of classes

Depending on the type of school varies the number of students in the classroom because of the training and support effort for example, pupils with learning difficulties is higher. Most are about 20 to 30 students in a school class.

In schools with special educational profile, the classes are compiled according to certain priorities ( math class, sports class, etc.). There is also the formation of different school types: mathematical / scientific, economic, languages, music.

Previously, the separation was common by gender. There were boys and girls classes, or boys 'and girls' schools. Through the principle of co-education, the separation was largely abolished.

In general, the composition of the students is carried out according to year of birth, that is, almost all students in the class belong to the same age group. In school try this principle is broken by the formation of mixed-age classes. In North Rhine -Westphalia (first and second class ) will be sought since 2005, the mixed-age input stage. There are also models that combine all years of primary school (first to fourth grade ) in a class.

There used in very small schools ( dwarf schools, mostly village schools ) often only a class that was made up of different age groups. Through merger and closure of such schools of this form have been for decades "outdated " as opposed. Disadvantage were especially longer ( time-consuming ) way to school and the associated costs for school buses or Schülerspezialverkehr and the separation of residential and school location of the children. The type of school Schoolhouse in some countries but still possible.
