Forno Glacier

The Fornogletscher (Romansh: Vadrec del Forno ) is a valley glacier south of the Maloja Pass in Bergell, in the south of the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. It has a length of 6 km and is thus under the Morteratschgletscher the second longest glacier in Graubünden. The average width is 800 to 900 m and the flow of ice covered with the Seitenfirnen an area of ​​approximately 8.5 square kilometers.

Description

His starting point takes the Fornogletscher to around 3,200 m above sea level. M. on the eastern flank of Cima di Castello ( 3'379 m ) and on the western slope of Mount Sissone ( 3,330 m); more firn ejected from the south of the crags of Torrone (up to 3,351 m) to do so. About this mountain is the boundary between Italy and Switzerland.

As the valley glacier Fornogletscher has a very low gradient of partially less than 10% and has almost no columns. It flows to the north and to the west of the Cima dal Cantun ( 3'354 m), to the east of the Cima di Rosso ( 3'366 m ) and the Monte Rosso ( 3,088 m) lined. The glacier is currently at 2,230 m in the Val Forno. Here arises the Orlegna, a side stream of Mera, which belongs to the basin of the Adda.

Little Ice Age

Since his high stage during the Little Ice Age in the mid- 19th century, the Fornogletscher has greatly withdrawn; he used to extend over 2 km further down the valley, which can be seen on the barren rubble of the former moraine good today.

Forno Hut

On the slope east of the glacier at 2,574 m is the Capanna del Forno, a hut from the Swiss Alpine Club SAC, which serves as a starting point for mountain tours in the vicinity of Fornogletschers.

The Forno Hut can accommodate 104 people. The cottage was built in 1889 by the mountain guide Christian Klucker and went in 1920 in the possession of the SAC Section Rorschach. The cabin can easily be reached after a walk past the Cavlocsee and along the glacier. The hut is the starting point for various hikes, for example, around Monte del Forno or on the Sentiero Alpino Bregalia to Albigna, Sciora and Sasc Furä Hut. From here can be made in the winter ski tours in Bergell: Cima di Castello, Cima di Rosso, Monte Sissone or Disgrazia are top targets in the area around the Fornogletscher.
