Etymology and History of Research

As Georges Cuvier in 1800 introduced the new genus of precious parakeet (Psittacula ), also Parrotlets have been assigned to this genus. The Grünbürzel Parrotlet and the Cuban parakeet did not really fit properly in the new class, but not in the genus of macaws ( Aratinga ). Thus, a new species was required.

For the etymology of the word Forpus there is no explanation. It has been suggested that it is for " have something, have something," from the Greek " phoreō πηορεο " and " pous πούς " composed for " foot." Arthur Alfred Prestwich presented in his book I Name This Parrot. Letter biographies of men and women in Whose honor commemorative names havebeen givenName the theory that it could be derived in reference to her short, wedge-shaped tails from the Latin " profuse " for " spread ".
