Fort Gibson (Oklahoma)

Fort Gibson is a town in Cherokee County and Muskogee County in the U.S. state of Oklahoma with 4,054 inhabitants ( 2000).

In Fort Gibson are the Fort Gibson National Cemetery and a museum Fort Gibson Historical Site in the reconstructed former U.S. fort, which was named after a Colonel George Gibson. He was standing in front of the Army Commissary Department, which organized the Trail of Tears of the Cherokee.

Fort Gibson, founded in 1824 by Colonel Matthew Arbuckle, is the oldest city in Oklahoma and is located in the northwest of the state.

The city now covers 36.3 km ².
