Foster is a town in Providence County, Rhode Iceland in the United States. The population was 4,606 according to the census of 2010.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of ​​134.3 km ², of which 132.5 km ² land and 1.9 km ² (1.41 % of the total ) are water. In Foster, the highest mountain of Rhode Island, Jerimoth Hill is located at a height of 248 m.

History

Foster was originally a farming colony of British colonists in the 17th century. In 1662, William Vaughan, Zachariah Rhodes and Robert Wescott bought the large land area in West Quanaug by the Indians, dss was adjacent to Providence. The purchase consisted of nearly half of the village Foster. The first settler was allegedly Ezekiel Hopkins. Many settlers from Newport were in the 18th century in the place active.

Foster was incorporated with Scituate in 1730 and formed the western part of the township, and remained part of Scituate until 1781, until it was split off as a separate township. Foster was named after the U.S. Senator Theodore Foster. Foster gave the place a library. Some of the original books in the library and local records are still available. U.S. Senator Nelson Aldrich was born in 1841 in Foster. He was important in the establishment of the U.S. Federal Reserve Board. In the 1920s, the Ku Klux Klan was active in the area and one of the largest Klan gatherings in Foster was held in the Old Home Day grounds in 1924 with 8,000 participants and U.S. Senator Thomas Heflin.

  • City Hall of Foster: built in 1796 and today is still used, the City Hall of Foster is the oldest administrative building of this type in the United States.
