Jerimoth Hill

Jerimoth Hill

The Jerimoth Hill is the name of the highest natural point in the U.S. state of Rhode Iceland, with a height of 247 m above sea level. Jerimoth Hill is located in Providence County, in the town of Foster, near the border with Connecticut.

Site

The highest point in itself, a narrow, kicking rocks to days, heard from Brown University. The plateau is forested by pine trees. The highest point itself is a rocky outlet in the woods.

History

The highest point was at Brown University by Walter Raymond Turner, a former student of class of 1911, donated. In 1938 he bought the saltbox house in the West and the surrounding 360 acres. Turner also put on a path north from the highest point to the RI State Route 101. The Brown University used the Jerimoth Hill for decades as astronomy observatory and they took advantage of the easy access to this private area to take a look at the sky away from light pollution in Providence.

Access

For many years, Walker had no access to the mountain, as the owner, Henry Richardson, forbade this. The highest point even heard of Brown University, not Richardson. However, his track was the only way leading to the rocks. Initially called Richardson visitors welcome and let them pass through his property without permission. But the increasing number suffered its musical instruments and music lessons given by him as well as his privacy. He closed the road and set up motion detectors around the property boundaries.

The co- editor desHighpointers Club Magazines, Dave Covill, tried for years to convince Richardson to allow club members to enter the highest point. He was finally successful in 1998. Richardson's partner Ed Bouchard gave approval for the hikers. It is allowed to visit at five selected holiday days per year Jerimoth Hill. Richardson died in 2001. In June 2005, Jeff and Debbie Mosley bought the approval Richardson and laid a path to the highest point with the help of many volunteers on Labor Day weekend 2005. Since August 2007, the mountain is open every day 8 to 16 clock (EST ) for club members and non club members. The RI State Route 101, the old Rhode Iceland and Connecticut Turnpike runs through the mountain.
