Fra Galgario

Fra Galgario ( born Giuseppe Vittore Ghislandi, he called himself as a painter Giuseppe and Vittore Ghislandi, born March 4, 1655 in Bergamo, † beginning in December 1743 ) was an Italian portrait painter of the late Baroque and early Rococo.

Life

Ghislandis father Domenico (c. 1656-1672 ) was a painter of landscapes and frescoes. Also one of Fra Galgarios brothers was a painter. Fra Galgario studied with Giacomo Cotta (1627-1689), Bartolomeo Bianchi. From 1675 he was in Venice, where he became a member ( a lay brother ) of the Friars Minor Order of San Francesco di Paola and changed his name from Giuseppe in Vittore. He stood up to a residence from 1688 to 1691 in Milan ( where it joins the German portrait painter Salomon Adler befriended and worked with him ) to 1702 in Venice. He was also a pupil of Sebastiano Bombelli. Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni invited him to Rome, but he turned down. 1702 he joined the Paulaner Medal at and under the name Fra Vittorio ( as a painter known as Fra Galgario ) in the monastery Galgario in Bergamo, but was also common in Milan. In 1717 he became a member of the Accademia Clementina in Bologna. He portrayed primarily noble families in the area of Bergamo, which he rarely left, but also ordinary people and clergy. He enjoyed a European reputation, pictures of him came to Lisbon, Vienna ( among other things Prinz Eugen ), Paris ( among others Marshal Belle -Isle ).

He continued the tradition of portraiture in Bergamo from the 16th century continued ( his example was especially Giovanni Battista Moroni ). His portraits are characterized by realistic rendering.
