Framheim was the base camp of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition ( 1910-12 ) led by Roald Amundsen. During this expedition, the geographic South Pole was first reached. Named the camp after the Fram, a specially built by the Norwegian ship designer Colin Archer for use in the polar zones ship that had left the polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen Amundsen for his expedition. Framheim was built on the Ross Ice Shelf in the Bay of Whales and served the expedition team of 21 January 1911 to 30 January 1912 as quarters. It consisted of a wooden hut, which was composed of prefabricated parts, and some with the cottage via underground tunnel connected tents.

Amundsen put during the Arctic summer 1911 several food depots between the 80th and 82nd Latitude, and then returned to the camp Framheim where the crew took over the Antarctic winter. On October 20, Amundsen broke with four companions, four sledges and 48 dogs of Framheim from the South Pole on which he reached on 14 December 1911. On January 25, 1912 Amundsen returned with his team back to the base camp Framheim.

When Richard Evelyn Byrd reached first Antarctic expedition in December 1928, the Bay of Whales, could discover no trace of the camp. Byrd had hoped to use Framheim as a base, but the landscape had changed so much since Amundsen's departure that Byrd and his men not even the exact location Framheims could be sure.
