Francesco Antonio Pistocchi

, Called Francesco Antonio Mamiliano Pistocchi also Pistocchino (* 1659 in Palermo, † May 13, 1726 in Bologna) was an Italian composer, librettist, alto castrato and singing teacher.

Life

In 1661 his parents moved to Bologna, where his father got a job as a violinist. Even as a three year old fell Pistocchi on through his beautiful voice and was a child prodigy. With eight years of his first compositions were printed and later became a celebrated alto castrato on the opera stages of northern Italy.

From 1686-1695 he had an appointment at the court of Parma and received in 1696 the post of Kapellmeister of the Margrave of Brandenburg- Anspach. After concert tours through Germany, which he undertook in collaboration with Giuseppe Torelli, he opened a singing school in Bologna. Among his most famous castrato Antonio Bernacchi the students were and Stefano Pasi. He is considered the founder of the Bolognese school of singing, which was continued by Bernacchi. 1715, after his voice had subsided, he retired to the monastery S.Filippo Neri at Forli back, he composed there arias, cantatas and oratorios.
