Francesco Storace

Francesco Storace ( born January 25, 1959 in Cassino ) is an Italian politician.

Career

He began his career at the post- fascist newspaper Il Secolo d' Italia before he became a member of the Movimento Sociale Italiano and later the National Alliance. 1994 Storace was first elected to the Chamber of Deputies. At that time he was a supporter of Gianfranco Fini.

In April 2000 he became president of the Lazio region. 2005, however, he missed the re-election and was defeated by center-left candidate Piero Marrazzo. He then became Health Minister in the Cabinet Berlusconi III.

In March 2006 he was involved in the so-called " Laziogate " scandal, which led to his resignation as a minister. Storace is suspected of having spied Alessandra Mussolini. On 10 April 2006, he was elected at the head of his party list in the Senate.

On July 3, 2007 after he had repeatedly criticized the leadership of Gianfranco Fini and the creeping shift the party toward political center, he left the National Alliance. He founded his own national- conservative party called La Destra ( The rights ).

In February 2013, he ran again for an alliance of his party with the Popolo della Libertà and other small parties right as president of the Lazio region, but lost to the center-left candidate Nicola Zingaretti.
