Francis Fisher

Francis Marion Bates Fisher (born 22 December 1877 in Wellington, † 1960) was a New Zealand politician and tennis player.

Life

Fisher was the son of George Fisher, of the mayor of Wellington and Members in the New Zealand Parliament. 1902 Fisher took part in the Second Boer War.

From 1905 to 1914, Fisher MP in the House of Representatives of New Zealand. He was originally a member of the Liberal Party, however, operated then as deviants in the short-lived New Liberal Party and joined by their dissolution in the elections of 1908 as an independent candidate. In 1910, he finally joined the reform a party. In the 1914 election he lost his seat against Robert Fletcher. Last Fisher stepped up to the elections in 1919, but this time had to admit defeat Arthur Henderson. Because of its frequent changes of party membership, he was also called "Rainbow Fisher ".

Tennis career

Fisher was an excellent tennis player. In 1906 he reached the final of the Australasian Championships, but it lost to Anthony Wilding. He won multiple championships of New Zealand in a double and mixed doubles. In 1920 he penetrated at the Wimbledon Championships in the doubles side by Josiah Ritchie to the semifinals. The following year, he reached the doubles final with Alfred Beamish the World Indoor Championships in London. In 1924, he completed two games for the New Zealand Davis Cup team during the game against Czechoslovakia. However, he lost both his individual as well as its double game at the John Peacock's side each in five sets.
