Francis Wong

Francis Shi- Ming Wong is an American jazz and improvisation musician (saxophone, the flute, clarinet, violin, percussion), composer and music producer.

Life and work

Wong has Chinese roots and plays since the 1980s in jazz and improvisation scene of the Asian American jazz movement in the San Francisco Bay Area, inter alia, with Mark Izu, William Roper, Bobby Bradford, John Tchicai, James Newton, Joseph Jarman, Don Moye and Glenn Horiuchi. In 1987 he founded the label with Jon Jang Asian Improv Records. He also works with his own formations, such as the Great Wall, the eight-member composers workshop Airshop and the trio Ming. In his feature fused Wong jazz, traditional Japanese and Chinese music. His role models are John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and David Murray. In the field of jazz Wong worked 1983-2009 with 66 recording sessions. From 1992 to 1998 he was a fellow of the California Arts Council, 2000/ 01 from Meet the Composer. Wong taught at the San Francisco State University (1996-98 ) and the University of California, Santa Cruz ( 1996-2001).
