Francisco Javier de Morales y Castejón de Arroyo

Francisco Javier de Morales y Castejón (* 1696 in Spain, † May 17, 1774 in Lima, Peru) was a Spanish officer and served from 1770 to 1773 as governor in the Captaincy General of Chile.

Morales was born in 1696, the son of Francisco Javier de Morales y Arroyo and his wife Juliana María Pérez de Castejón. His father was secretary of the king in the Ministry of Justice.

He embarked on a military career. Until his transfer to Peru in October 1768, he served as captain of the Guard Infantry. His crossing was delayed because the fleet was thrown back by severe storms to Spain.

He was promoted to commander of the land forces by order dated January 1770 and took over from Juan de Balmaseda commissioned to lead the war against the Mapuche to success in the south of Chile. On March 17, he took over the office of the governor of Chile. After the rebels had brought more than two hundred Spanish soldiers in their violence, Morales was forced to sign the Peace of Negrete, which cost the Spaniards 8,000 pesos and thousands of cattle.

After the end of the war Agustín de Jáuregui was appointed governor. Morales gave up his post in March 1773 from, traveled to Lima, where he died soon after.
