Francisco Pacheco

Francisco Pacheco del Rio, also known as Francisco Pacheco ( * 1564 in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, † 1654 in Seville) was a Spanish painter, art theorist and poet.

Life and work

Pacheco grew up in modest circumstances. After the early death of his father he came to Seville to his uncle, who sent him to the workshop of Luis Fernández. Later he built a successful workshop and in 1611 a school of painting that one " Academia Sevillana " called. 1611 Pacheco traveled to Madrid and Toledo, where he met with El Greco. Pacheco served as Malerzensor for the Inquisition in Seville. He was one of the founders of the Spanish naturalistic style, and he played an important role during the transition from Mannerism to the Baroque.
