Francisco Rezek

José Francisco Rezek ( born January 18, 1944 in Cristina, Minas Gerais ) is a Brazilian lawyer and diplomat. He worked from 1983 to 1990 and from 1992 to 1997 as a judge on the Supremo Tribunal Federal, the Supreme Court of his native country from 1990 to 1992 as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, and from 1997 to 2006 as a judge of the International Court of Justice.

Life

Francisco Rezek was born in 1944 in Cristina and studied until 1967 Law at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte. Subsequently, he worked as a practicing lawyer. After further studies, including at Harvard University and at the Hague Academy of International Law, he received his doctorate in 1970 at the Sorbonne in the field of international law. He also holds a diploma in 1979 at Wolfson College, University of Oxford.

From 1971 to 1997 he was a professor of International Law and Constitutional Law at the Universidade de Brasília, including from 1974 to 1976 as head of the department of jurisprudential and in 1978/ 1979 as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. From 1976 he had moreover also held a professorship of International Law at the Instituto Rio Branco, the higher education institution in Brazil to train diplomats. In 1986 he taught as a lecturer at the Hague Academy of International Law.

From 1979, Francisco Rezek Deputy Attorney General ( Subprocurador - Geral ) in his home country. Subsequently, he worked from 1983 to 1990 as a judge on the Supremo Tribunal Federal, the Supreme Court of Brazil. From March 1990 to April 1992 he took over the post of foreign minister, then he returned to the Supreme Court. As of February 1997, he worked as a judge at the International Court in The Hague, its as scheduled nine -year term ended in 2006. Since 1987 He also holds positions at the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
