Franciscus Quaresmius

Francesco Quaresmio ( Francesco Quaresmi, Franciscus Quaresmius; born April 4, 1583 Lodi, Lombardy, Italy, † October 25, 1656 in Milan ) was an Orientalist and Palästinologe and Franciscan friar ( OFM). From 1645 to 1648 he served as General and Procurator General highest offices of his order.

Life

Francesco Quaresmio was born on April 4, 1583, the son of nobles Quaresmio Alberto and his mother Laura dad. He has performed approximately 1598 the monastery Mantua and thus the Franciscan order in, so at a young age of about 15 years.

Quaresmio traveled on behalf of the Pope repeated the Orient. 1618-1619, he was appointed president of the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land. During this time he was arrested twice by the Turks.

From 1620 he lived in Europe before he went back to Jerusalem in 1625. The following year he held in Holy Sepulchre addressed to Philip IV of Spain speech, and invited him to reconquer the Holy Land.

Quaresmio supervised from 1627 to 1629, the mission of the Chaldeans as its Vice - Patriarch and papal commissioner, as well as the mission of the Maronites. He was charged by Pope Urban VIII talks in Mosul with the Chaldean Church, which should lead to a union of the churches. However, this matter was not a success. 1629 Quaresmio interrupted his stay in the Middle East to return for a short time to Rome to report to the pope report on the situation of the Eastern Churches. He then traveled back to the Middle East, how long he remained there is not known.

Later Quaresmio finally returned to Italy, only interrupted by trips within Europe ( Germany, France, Belgium and Holland). It earned him the respect of his contemporaries as a preacher, teacher of philosophy, theology and canon law. In 1637 Quaresmio was initially entrusted with the duties of the guardian of the monastery of S. Angelo in Milan, and after further stages of his ecclesiastical career in office held Quaresmio 1645-1648 as General and Procurator General highest offices of his order.
