François Perrier (painter)

François Perrier (* 1590 in Burgundy, † 1650 in Paris) was a French painter and engraver.

Life

About 1625 he went to Rome to learn at Giovanni Lanfranco. In 1630 he comes after a short stay in Lyon to Paris, where he works with the court painter Simon Vouet. He has a decisive influence on Charles le Brun, who was his pupil from 1632 to 1634. 1635 Francois Perrier pulls back to Rome, where he worked on the frescoes of the Palazzo Peretti - Almagia. In Rome, he created a series of one hundred engravings after presentation of the most famous ancient Roman sculptures that time. About 1645 he comes back and works with Eustache Le Sueur at the Hotel Lambert. In 1648 he founded with twelve other artists, the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture.

Importance

Most of his works have disappeared. His art historical importance, he owes the surviving figures of the ancient Roman art. He also had much influence on French painting as a teacher of Charles le Brun.
