Giovanni Lanfranco

Giovanni Lanfranco ( born January 26, 1582 Parma, † November 30, 1647 in Rome ) was an Italian painter and draftsman. He is an important representative of fresco painting of the High Baroque. In addition, Lanfranco is also known for his altarpieces. Lanfranco was mainly fresco painter; his oil paintings are insignificant, its murals, however, show a bold imagination and a bright color, but are usually superficial improvisations. It makes the transition from school to the Carracci style of Pietro da Cortona. He drew over fifty works, mostly drawings and detail studies in black chalk on gray-brown or bluish paper.

Life

Lanfranco studied under Agostino Carracci in Bologna and in Rome with his brother Annibale Carracci. This gave Lanfranco different orders for the design of a building of the Farnese family. Later lived and worked Lanfranco in his hometown and in Piacenza, after which he returned to Rome. Here he gave his growing reputation, numerous orders. The large dome painting the Assumption Mary with the angel glory was especially great acclaim. It represents a vast space of the sky and ends with a halo, the light pours from the main character, the Eternal Father, from. He was overwhelmed at the end of his work with commissioned works and painted many pictures in volatile, hollow style.

After completion of a mosaic panel on the altar in St. Peter della Navicella Peter, with Christ walking on the sea Lanfranco 1634 followed a call of the Jesuits in Naples for the decoration of the Order of Chiesa del Gesu Nuovo.

He stood at the Popes Paul V and Urban VIII in high favor. His last work was the decoration of the chapel " San Carlo Catenari ".

At the age of 65 years Lanfranco died on November 30, 1647 in Rome.
