Frank Close

Francis Edwin " Frank" Close ( born July 24, 1945 in Peterborough ) is a British particle physicist.

Close went to Peterborough to school and studied physics at the University of St. Andrews ( Bachelor 1967) and at the University of Oxford ( Magdalen College), where he received his doctorate in theoretical physics at Richard Dalitz 1970. As a post - graduate student he was at SLAC, was in 1973 at Daresbury Laboratory, and from 1973 to 1975 at CERN. From 1975 he was at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, where he led the theory department from 1991. 1997 to 2000 he was responsible for public relations at CERN. From 2001 he was Professor of Theoretical Physics at Oxford. 1996 to 2002 he was a visiting professor at the University of Birmingham.

He is known by various popular science books on particle physics, cosmology and related topics (such as cold fusion ).

He was on the Council of the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures which he gave in 1993 ( published as Cosmic Onion ). In 1996 he received the Kelvin Medal, the 2013 Michael Faraday Prize. 2000 to 2003 he was Gresham Professor of Astronomy at University College London ( a professorship connected with public lectures). He was vice-president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.
