Frank Rutherford

Frank Rutherford ( Frank Garfield Rutherford, born November 23, 1964) is a former Bahamian triple jumper.

His first international success was a silver medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1986. Following year, he won at the World Indoor Championships in Indianapolis bronze. It was the first World Championship medal in athletics for Bahamians. Also he won bronze at the Pan American Games in Indianapolis. At the World Championships in Rome, he retired in the qualifier, as in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.

In 1991 he was eighth at the World Indoor Championships in Seville, but did not at the World Championships in Tokyo on the first round also.

He celebrated his biggest success with the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Behind the Americans Mike Conley and Charles Simpkins he won bronze. It was the first Olympic medal for the Bahamas since 1964. At the World Championships in Stuttgart in 1993 and 1995 in Gothenburg, he left in qualifying.

In his third Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996, he was eleventh. In 1999 he won silver at the Track and Central America and the Caribbean Meisterschaftn.

Frank Rutherford graduated from the University of Houston to study economics. After the end of his athletic career, he founded the Frank Rutherford Foundation, a foundation that provides sports scholarships to U.S. universities to Bahamian student athletes. At the beginning of 2003 he was awarded for his services to the sport with the MBE.
