1993 World Championships in Athletics
The 4th World Athletics Championships were held from August 13 to 21 in 1993 in Stuttgart. The competitions were held in the Gottlieb Daimler Stadium ( now called the Mercedes -Benz Arena). It was attended by 1689 athletes from 187 countries participate.

Overview
The Event Frequency was changed with these world championships from four to two years. Was newly added to the program of the triple jump women. For the first time Germany hosted the World Athletics Championships. It was not until 16 years later found with the World Championships in Berlin again in 2009 World Championships in Athletics held in Germany.
A total of four new world records were set:
- The Briton Colin Jackson put the race on 110 meter hurdles in 12.91 s back.
- The U.S. 4x400 - meter relay team reached a time 2:54,29 min.
- The Briton Sally Gunnell reached 400m hurdles time 52.74 s
- The Russian Anna Birjukowa scored a triple jump a width 15,09 m.
Spectator interest
The World Championships were a total of 585,000 spectators attended - the highest ever recorded number of audience at World Athletics Championships. For "the great audience interest, expertise and enthusiasm of the audience ," visitors to the World Championships were awarded the Fair Play Award by UNESCO. Not only the athletes from the host country were cheered as in many subsequent World Championships. Each starter earned respect and applause from the stands. La Ola walked countless times through the rows of the audience.
Others
The Athletes' Village was in the recently vacated barracks Nellingen Barracks in Ostfildern. The site was rededicated after the event as the new district Scharnhauser Park
The world championships moved to the counterparties located at the Gottlieb -Daimler Stadium Stuttgart to postpone his upcoming in 1993 celebrations of the 100th anniversary for the most part the following year.
