Frans Pourbus the Elder

Frans Pourbus ( the Elder) (* 1545 in Bruges, † September 19, 1581 in Antwerp ) was a Dutch historical and portrait painter.

Life and work

His parents were Pieter Jansz and Anna Blondeel. Pourbus was pupil of his father Pieter Pourbus Frans Floris and since 1562 the. In 1569 he married the niece of Floris and was admitted to the Guild of St. Luke at Antwerp. In 1566 he went on a trip to Italy, which ended in Ghent. He stayed with his classmate Lucas de Heere ( 1534-1584 ).

After his return in 1578 he married Anna Mahieu, which after his death Hans Jordaens (* 1555, † 1630) married.

In 1570 he finished with Crispin van den Broeck an altarpiece by Floris. To 1579, he produced in Tournai at some paintings. They were in 1933, among others, in the Cathedral in Tournai.

Style

In contrast to the more muted colors of his teacher Floris, his color palette is colorful. He has painted portraits preferably from strong clear color ( many in the galleries of Brussels, Berlin, Vienna and Dresden, self-portrait in the Uffizi at Florence ), rare historical images ( Christ among the Doctors in St. Bavo at Ghent). His portrait of Viglius Zuichemus in the Louvre attests to its high Stofflichkeitsillusion. As a portrait painter he is synonymous with Adriaen Thomas Key (* 1544, † 1590).

1575 Gortzius Geldorp belonged to his workshop. His son Frans Pourbus the Younger was also a painter.

Reception

His estate inventoried in 1581 in Antwerp Pieter Pourbus his father, Cornelis Floris, Gillis van Coninxloo and Pavel Driessen.
