Franz Hettinger

Franz Hettinger ( born January 13, 1819 in Aschaffenburg, † January 26, 1890 in Würzburg ) was a German Roman Catholic priest and professor of patristics, dogmatics, and homiletics.

Life

After attending high school in Aschaffenburg he began studying philosophy and later of theology. Until 1841 he attended the theological seminary in Würzburg. He then studied at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome, was there ordained on September 2, 1843 by Cardinal Patrizi and acquired in 1845 the degree of Doctor of Theology. In Germany he was from 1845 Kaplan in Alzenau, from 1847 he served as an assistant at the seminary Würzburg, to which he was chancellor of 1852 appointed. From 1857 he taught as a professor Patrology and initiation in Würzburg, and later apologetics, homiletics and from 1884 dogmatics.

As Professor Hettinger 1863 belonged to the founders of the fraternity K.St.V. Walhalla Würzburg in CT, where he remained a lifelong. 1873 Hettinger was also an honorary member of the fraternity KDSt.V. Markomannia in the CV.

With Josef Hergenröther he was appointed in 1868 to Rome to prepare as Konsultator the first Vatican Council. 1879 he was appointed by Pope Leo XIII. papal prelate house.

Hettinger was a leading scholar with wide-ranging interests. As an academic teacher and speaker, he was exceedingly popular, widely read as an author. He has received numerous honors and was charged by the King of Bavaria to the peerage.

Works

Hettinger entered as an apologist and dogmatists distinguished by its " Apology of Christianity," published 1863-1967, which saw six editions until the end of the 19th century, and by his " Textbook of fundamental theology " of 1879 " For the world and the Church.; Pictures and sketches " from 1885 was the most widespread plant Hettingers.
