Franz Josef Ruprecht

Franz Joseph Ruprecht ( born November 1, 1814 Freiburg im Breisgau, . † 23 Julijul / August 4 1870greg in Saint Petersburg, . Life

Ruprecht was born in 1814 in Freiburg im Breisgau. He attended a grammar school in Prague, where in 1830 he graduated at the age of 16 years. Here he began studying at the medical faculty of the University of Prague, which he finished in 1836. In 1839 he joined the staff of the Botanical Museum of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. The aim of Rupert Research Travel was among other things the north of the European part of Russia in 1841, and the Caucasus between 1860 and 1862.

Ruprecht in 1851 deputy head of the Imperial Botanical Garden in Saint Petersburg. In 1853 he became a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and in 1855 director of the botanical museum.

As a connoisseur of Russian Flora, he published a number of subject-specific works. Topics was among other things the systematics of grasses and aquatic plants.

Honors

Named Carl Anton von Meyer after him the genus Ruprechtia from the family of the buckwheat family.
