Franz Unger

Franz Joseph Andreas Nicolaus Unger ( * November 30, 1800 on Good office Mayrhofen in Leutschach in Styria, Austria, † February 13, 1870 in Graz) was an Austrian botanist, paleontologist and plant physiologist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Wade".

Life and work

Unger initially studied law at the University of Graz and then moved in 1820 to the University of Vienna, where he studied medicine. From 1822 he was enrolled at the Charles University in Prague. In 1823 he moved back to the University of Vienna, where he received his doctorate in 1827 for Dr. med. During his studies he was in 1820 a member of the fraternity Lichen circle in Graz.

From 1827 he practiced medicine in Stockerau at Vienna, from 1830 as a regional court physician in Kitzbühel in Tyrol. In 1836 he became professor of botany at the Karl- Franzens- University of Graz, 1850 Professor of Plant Physiology in Vienna. In 1852 he traveled to Northern Europe, the Orient and later lived since 1866, retired to his estate near Graz.

Unger earned first significant contributions to paleontology, but later turned to more physiology and Phytotomie to and promoted above all the doctrine of cell and protoplasm.
