Franz von Pitha

Franz Freiherr von Pitha ( born February 8, 1810 in RAKOM, Bohemia, † December 29, 1875 in Vienna ) was a Bohemian- Austrian surgeon.

Pitha studied at the University of Prague, and in 1837 Dr. chir. PhD, from 1843 he was the successor of his teacher Fritz Professor of Surgery. From 1857 to 1874 he was head of surgery at the Josephinum in Vienna. In 1859, he was employed in the war in Italy as a military surgeon, the same year he was ennobled, 1875 raised to the baron.

He dealt with the new anesthetic procedures with hospital gangrene, glottal edema and subcutaneous vein ligations. He sat down for a cookable cotton as a dressing material and advocated the appointment of Theodor Billroth in Vienna.
