Franz Wulfhagen

Franz Wulfhagen (* 1624 in Bremen, † 1670 ) was a German painter, draftsman and etcher and is considered one of the most respected artists of the 17th century Bremen.

Life

Wulf Hagen's grandfather Johann Wulfhagen had 1588 Bremen civil rights acquired after he was pulled from the area around Deventer in the Netherlands to Bremen.

Wulfhagen became a painter, moved to Amsterdam and was in the 1640s student of Rembrandt, whose style greatly influenced his work. From 1648 to 1657 he lived in width castle in Holstein. He leased a farm yard for his studio. For the kingdom of Count Christian of Rantzau he produced numerous portraits. However, it is not in the original new works, but copies of portraits of the German electors and the Swedish king. Probably Wulfhagen had adopted this extensive contract because it was deeply in debt in Bremen.

End of the 1650s came Wulfhagen back to Bremen, where he worked as a painter, draftsman and etcher. In 1663 he was once more in width castle to repair as a restorer image collection of the Earl. His best-known painting was made shortly before his death, when he in 1669 for the sum of 95 marks on behalf of the Bremen Council a monumental image of a painted Wales, who was stranded on the Lesum. The Great Walbild with a dimension of 9.55 × 3.55 meters depended almost 300 years continuously in the upper hall of the town hall of Bremen Town Hall before it first arrived in the Ethnological Museum and later in the Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven in 1965. 2008 it returned after an extensive restoration back to the Upper Town Hall Hall.
