Franz Xaver Gebel

Franz Xaver Gebel (* 1787 in Fuerstenau at Breslau. . † 21 Apriljul / May 3 1843greg in Moscow ) was a German composer, pianist and conductor.

Life

Franz Xaver Gebel was trained in Vienna by Abbé Vogler and Albrechtsberger. Here he was in 1810 Kapellmeister at the Leopold Municipal Theatre. This was followed by employment in Pest and Lemberg. In 1817 he went to Moscow, where he worked as a music teacher, organizer of chamber music concerts, pianist and composer, was very successful. Among his students Nikolai Rubinstein, Feofil Tolstoy (1809-1881), Nikolai Mel'gunov and Alexander Villoing.

Importance

The complete works of Franz Xaver Gebel is only partially explored and the source material quite unclear. He played in the Moscow music scene of the 1830s a significant role, as it was a great connoisseur of the Viennese classical, especially the works of Beethoven. His chamber music concerts attracted a wide audience. 1834 Mikhail Glinka met him know and praised the perfect performance of Gebels string quartets and string quintets. The facture of the Quintette proves melodic gift, a refined craftsmanship, safe handling of tools and a certain preference for the cello, for the Franz Xaver Gebel wrote cantilenas effective.
