Fred (comics)

Othon Frédéric Théodore Aristides ( born March 5, 1931 in Paris, † April 2, 2013 ibid ), known as Fred, was a French comic artist who was best known for his series Philémon.

Career

The son of Greek immigrants, he began his career with a cartoon he could publish in the magazine Zéro 1954. In the following years, his drawings were printed in various French and international magazines, including France Dimanche, Punch and The New Yorker. In 1960 he founded, together with Georges Bernier and François Cavanna the satirical journal Hara- Kiri month. As artistic director, he designed the first 60 covers of the magazine and drew several strips, including Le Petit Cirque, which he took up again later. In addition, he also worked as Comicszenarist for other artists such as Jean -Claude Mézières, Georges Pichard, and Alexis.

In 1965, he left the magazine and devoted himself to his own series Philémon. The fairytale-like narrative style he performs in 1973 with Le Petit Cirque, Stories from a traveling circus on.

Benoît Peeters devoted Fred imagery 2004, a result of his documentary series for the TV station ARTE and describes it as a separate universe, in which he takes his readers.

Philémon

Fred Philémon series started in 1965 with a 15-page story he wrote for Spirou. The fantastic - realistic series did not hit the taste of the magazine and was rejected. René Goscinny they wanted to publish in Pilote. The offer took Fred on the condition that he could continue to make even the drawings. The first episode, The Mystery of clairière des trois hiboux, appeared in Pilote No. 300 The last of a total of 15 on the magazine publications following albums was released in 1987.

Philémon is a teenager who can reach through a portal, a parallel world in which he is implicated in different adventures. Awards

In 1980 he received the Grand Prix de la Ville d' Angoulême at the International Comic Festival in Angoulême. L' Histoire du Corbac aux baskets awarded at the festival in 1994 with the Prix du meilleur album.
