Fred Klein

Fred Klein ( born April 8, 1898 in Badoeng, Dutch East Indies as Friedrich Franz Albert Klein, † 24 April 1990) was a Dutch painter who spent most of his life in France. Part of it is also listed under Frits Klein. He is the father of Yves Klein (1928-1962), a son from his first marriage to Marie Raymond ( 1908-1989 ).

Life

Klein's parents were Dutch. The family moved when he was five years old back in their country of origin. As Klein decided to become a painter, he moved first to Paris in 1919 and was instructed by André Lhote. From 1926 he lived with his wife Marie Richmond in the Dutch colony of artists Cagnes -sur -Mer in southern France until the Second World War broke out and they returned to Paris. In 1960 he married the British artist Ursula Bardsley.

Work

His motives were especially colorful beach scenes, flowers and always horses. His techniques were pastel painting and watercolor painting.
