Freedom & Roam Uganda

Freedom and Roam Uganda ( FARUG ) is a Ugandan LGBT organization, which works in particular for improving the situation of lesbian and bisexual women, transgender and intersex persons ( LBTI ) in the country. The name of Freedom and Roam means to German as " freedom and liberty " and alludes to the goal of being able to move freely and openly and equally in society. Seat of FARUG is in Kampala.

Development of the organization

FARUG was founded in 2003 by the Ugandan lesbian activist Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera human rights with some other lesbian women. She led FARUG since the founding until June 2013, and takes a leading role in the Ugandan LGBT civil rights movement. For her unwavering fight she was honored in 2011 with the prestigious Martin Ennals Human Rights Award Award for Human Rights Defenders and was honored in September 2013 with the tenth Nuremberg International Human Rights Award.

One publication of According FARUG blogs Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera entered 1 July 2013 back from the line position of the organization is therefore since then filled by Junic Wambya.

Activities

The work of FARUG also included the fight against the bill to tighten legislation against homosexuality, the first time in 2009 was introduced into the Ugandan parliament and 2011 failed after renewed consultation in Parliament. FARUG sat in that regard to national, international and regional level and went into partnerships with feminist, women's and human rights, and health and donor organizations.

One intercepted by NBC message of the Guardian on February 2012, according to an event organized by FARUG Conference on LGBT rights, with about 30 delegates was stopped in a hotel in Entebbe by the Minister of the Ugandan government Lokodo Simon himself, accompanied by a police presence. The participating co-organizer Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera threatened with arrest and she was forced to flee from the hotel. The Secretary-General of Amnesty International Salil Shetty then criticized the conduct of the Ugandan Government sharp.

Is sponsored FARUG since 2012 resident in Germany from the Hirschfeld- Eddy Foundation. In 2011, according to the Foundation launched FARUG reports, " Hate No More Campaign " against homophobic violence and legislation in Uganda. Together with the Berlin- Brandenburg LSVD a lesbian activist from FARUG was invited to give a lecture about their work and the situation of lesbians in Uganda to Berlin in March 2012. Within the LGBT community in Germany in 2012 it came to an appeal for donations and a media campaign in favor of FARUG. Through the T- action of L -Mag 1500 Euro were taken in donations, according to the magazine, which were handed over in February 2013 the Hirschfeld- Eddy Foundation.
