Frei Betto

Frei Betto O.P. ( "Brother Betto ", real name Carlos Alberto Libânio Christo, born August 25, 1944 in Belo Horizonte ) is Dominican and one of the major liberation theologians in Latin America.

From a young age, Frei Betto engaged in Catholic social work and was regarded as militant fighters against the military dictatorship installed in 1964. Beginning of the 70s he spent two years as a political prisoner in jail. After his release he served, inter alia, as a liaison between the government of Cuba under Fidel Castro and the Catholic Church.

From the popular movement against the military dictatorship, he knows the later Brazilian President Lula da Silva. When Lula was arrested in April 1980 by the police, free Betto lived in the same house as Lula. This made ​​him 2003 for the government consultant; Frei Betto was for the anti - hunger program of the government ( Fome Zero ) responsible.

In 2004, he gave in to a conflict with the Minister of Social Development, Patrus Antanias, and because the fight against hunger program lacked the financial resources, announced his retirement.

2013 Free Betto was honored by UNESCO for his commitment to human rights and social justice.
