Freisen is a municipality in the district of St. Wendel in the northeastern part of the Saarland on the border to Rhineland- Palatinate.

Geography

Geographical location

Freisen located in the Palatinate mountains. Within 50 km there are the cities of Saarbrücken and Trier, as well as the city of Kaiserslautern. Between the community churches and parts of Upper Reitscheid the Füsselberg and Weisel mountain uplift.

History

Freisen 1235 under the name Fresenacum was first mentioned.

The community was given its present cutting largely on 1 January 1974 as part of the Saarland territorial and administrative reform, as the new Freisen was formed from the previously independent municipalities Asweiler, Eitzweiler, Freisen, Grügelborn, Haupersweiler, Upper churches, Reitscheid and black earth.

On 1 January 2004, an area of the town and then 53 inhabitants in the municipality Herchweiler, Kusel, Rhineland -Palatinate, reclassified.
