Frets on Fire

Frets on Fire (English for " frets on fire " ) is a free music computer game in which the user virtually playing electric guitar. The game is the winner of the Assembly Demo Party 2006. It is written in Python and uses the Amanith library.

Game mechanics

Frets on Fire is a Guitar Hero clone. The player tries to reenact the guitar parts from different songs. The notes are displayed on the screen in sync with the song playing in the background. They will play the notes by holding the " Fret Buttons " (default: F1 -F5) and timely hitting the " Pick buttons " (default: Enter). Series of notes played correctly increase the score multiplier, a mistake, however, puts it back again. At the end of a song, the player receives a score in the form of points, from zero to five stars, the percentage number of correct notes played and the length of the longest series correctly played notes. High Scores can be uploaded to the official website and thus are compared with those of other players.

A special feature of this game is to control: The keyboard is recorded and kept similar as a guitar: The left hand of the " Fret Buttons ", the right to the "pick button".

Functionalities

  • Depending on the song up to four different levels of difficulty ( Depp Safe, Comfortable, normal and total sick).
  • A tutorial that explains the basic functions.
  • A song editor for creating new " Frets " for her own songs.
  • Three standard songs (with three difficulty levels ), more can be downloaded from the website.
  • The key assignment of " Fret buttons" and the "pick button" can be changed. This is useful insofar as some keyboards do not support exotic key combinations, which makes playing some chords impossible ( see System Requirements).
  • Joystick support, so that the Guitar Hero guitar (PlayStation 2 ) can be used by PS2-/USB-Adapter.
  • Joystick support, also for Playstation 3 Guitar Hero guitar that can be used with the included wireless USB adapter. The PC will automatically detect the Playstation 3 guitar controller and thus can be used in Frets on Fire.
  • Since the update of 30 August 2006 songs can be imported directly from Guitar Hero.
  • New sheet music for various songs are constantly being developed and published by the community.
  • Guitar Hero Guitar Wii possible via Bluetooth and GlovePIE

System Requirements

Windows: 128 MB RAM, a fast OpenGL graphics card ( shader support not required), DirectX compatible sound card.

Linux: SDL, SDL_ttf, SDL_mixer, 128 MB RAM, a fast OpenGL graphics card ( shader support not necessary, antialiasing support recommended ), SDL compatible sound card.

The default key assignment does not work with any keyboard. While the simultaneous pressing of a " Fret buttons" and the "pick button" is not a problem, no longer works the same with two or three " Fret buttons" and the "pick button". This depends on the internal design of the keyboard and is independent of the type of connection (USB, PS / 2, radio ), the age and quality of the keyboard. In general, it helps to change the keyboard layout (for example to the number keys 1-5 instead of the function keys).
