Friedrich Sigmund Merkel

Johann Friedrich Sigmund Merkel ( born April 5, 1845 in Nuremberg, † May 28, 1919 in Göttingen) was a German physician, anatomist, and rector of the University of Rostock.

Life

Friedrich Merkel studied from 1864 onwards medicine at the universities of Erlangen, Greifswald and Göttingen. Since 1865 he was a member of the Corps Baruthia Erlangen.

He received his Ph.D. in 1869 in Erlangen, Dr. med. During the same year he became prosector at the Anatomical Institute in Göttingen, where he habilitated in 1870. In 1872 he was appointed Full Professor of Anatomy and Director of the Anatomical Institute of the University of Rostock. In the years 1881 and 1882, Merkel was elected Rector of the University of Rostock. In 1883 he was appointed the Albertus University of Königsberg. After two years he moved Merkel back to Göttingen, where he was in 1885, succeeding his teacher and father- Jakob Henle.

In honor of his achievements in microscopic technique, topographic anatomy and histology, he was inducted into the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 1880. Merkel was elected in 1885 at the University of Göttingen as a regular member in the Mathematics and Physical Class of the Company of Science. According to him, the Merkel cells or Merkel 's corpuscles ( Merkel - sensor disks ) are named.
