Friedrich von Amerling

Friedrich Ritter von Amerling ( born April 14, 1803 in Spittelberg, † January 14, 1887 in Vienna) was an Austrian painter. In addition to Ferdinand Georg Müller forest Amerling was one of the most respected Austrian portrait painters of the 19th century.

Life

Friedrich Amerling was the son of gold and silver mastermind Amerling Franz and his wife Theresia Kargl. He studied from 1815 to 1824 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Initially he attends the school of engraving with Josef Klieber, he joined the class for " Historical illustration reasons " at Hubert Maurer and Karl Gsellhofer ( 1779-1858 ).

1824 Amerling went to Prague to his uncle Henry, and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Prague as a student of Joseph Bergler the Younger to 1826 on. 1827 and 1828 he spent in London, where he was influenced by the portrait painter Sir Thomas Lawrence. Further journeys led him to Paris, where he worked with Horace Vernet, and Rome before he - since 1828 back in Vienna - executed orders of the Austrian imperial family, the nobility and the bourgeoisie.

In 1829 he received the Reichel prize of the academy in Vienna. Amerling took his life traveling extensively: in 1836 and 1838 to Italy, 1838 in the Netherlands, 1839 to Munich, 1840-43 in Rome, 1882 in Spain, 1883 in England, 1884 to Greece in 1885 to Scandinavia to the North Cape and 1886 Egypt and Palestine.

Amerling was married four times: 1832 until her death in 1843 by Antonie Kaltenthaler, 1844 to divorce in 1845 Catherine Heißler, 1857 until her death in 1880 with Emilie Heinrich, and in 1881 with Maria Nemetschke, formerly married Paterno. 1878 Amerling was elevated to the nobility and was called Friedrich Ritter von Amerling since then. As one of the most respected artists of Vienna he received numerous important men of letters and musicians ( such as Franz Liszt) at home.

1858 acquired Amerling the Gumpendorf castle in Vienna and equipped it after his taste with valuable art treasures. The building was therefore called in the vernacular also Amerlingschlößl. Also, an important collection of wrought iron work was owned by the artist.

In addition to numerous other honors he received in 1879 the Order of the Iron Crown. After his death, he was awarded an honorary grave in Vienna's Central Cemetery (Group 14 A, number 30 ), which was designed by Johannes Benk. From the same artist also Amerling monument in the Viennese city park dates back to 1902.

1887 Amerlingstraße was named after the painter in Vienna. The Amerlinghaus called the artist's birthplace is since 1978 a cultural and communications center, where you will also find the district museum building. In 1948 the Austrian post office issued a special stamp to mark the 60th anniversary of the death of Friedrich von Amerling out.

Performance

Amerling created more than 1,000 works, mostly portraits. He was the most popular portraitist of the aristocracy and the upper middle class in the period of Viennese Biedermeier; the culmination of his work lay in the between 1830 and 1850. Elegant drawing, exotic arrangements and magnificent colors characterize his works. Most of his paintings is in Austrian museums and collections. A sensational price of 1.5023 million euro achieved on 15 October 2008 at the auction house Dorotheum the "Girl with Straw Hat " from the year 1835. Buyer is the Liechtenstein Museum in Vienna.
