Hubert Maurer

Hubert Maurer ( born June 10, 1738 in Röttgen ( today part of Bonn), † December 10, 1818 in Vienna ) was a German painter, draftsman and drawing teacher at the Vienna Academy.

Life and work

First was a bricklayer students in kurbayrischen court painter Johann Georg Winter (* 1707, † 1770).

In 1762, Maurer continued his education at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He was there among others Student of from about 1769/70 mentally ill sculptor Franz Xaver Messerschmidt, who wanted to kill him in a fit of paranoia even once.

From 1772 until about 1776, he belonged to a group of first - provided with a board - painters in Rome ( see also German Romans ), where he was also in contact with Anton Raphael Mengs.

Since 1785 Maurer was then a member, the Council and for 32 years a professor at the elementary drawing school of the Vienna Academy.

The Vienna Academy was the largest and most prestigious art school in Europe. The lessons consisted mainly of drawing lessons. Traditionally, the training was divided into three stages. It began with the signing off of original sheets, then followed the drawing after antiques and finally drawing the model. The professors and the directors of the individual schools had to make monthly new template sheets.

Maurer made ​​, inter alia, at the Academy of systematic studies on by masters of the Italian High Renaissance for the collection of teaching resources.
