Wilhelm August Rieder

Wilhelm August Rieder ( born October 30, 1796 in Oberdöbling; † September 8, 1880 in Vienna ) was an Austrian portrait, genre, and history painter and draftsman and lithographer. He is the most famous portraitist of Franz Schubert.

Life

Wilhelm August Rieder was the second son of Ambros Rieder, a schoolmaster, choirmaster and composer of over 500, mostly religious works. He lived at his birthplace Oberdöbling as his four brothers, until his father to Perchtoldsdorf near Vienna moved.

WA Rieder was taught by his father in the basic school subjects and in music. Soon recognized his talent. It took him only 16 years at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. There he studied with Hubert Maurer ( * 1738, † 1818). Until 1824 he remained at the Academy enrolled and made his diploma in 1825.

The works of his early period are close to the Nazarenes.

Funded the certainly not wealthy son of Perchtoldsdorfer schoolmaster was the Kabinettskonzipisten (Cabinet writer ) Valentin Günther, a friend of Mozart, and Franz Christoph Artmann, a Lower Austrian Government Secretary, who gratuitously took the young Rieder in board and lodging and him by five years and the study paid. From 1857 to 1878 he was curator at the Belvedere Gallery.

His relationship with Franz Schubert

During his academy studies Rieder came into the circle of friends of the painter and poet by Franz Schubert. Schubert and Rieder were the same age and were soon on friendly terms. Rieder, however, had in his apartment a piano that Schubert not. He offered to Schubert, to use the piano since he was soon recognized his great talent. 1825 was the most famous Schubert image Rieder, which the composer sitting on a chair, with glasses pointing. Moritz von Schwind described it as "probably the best Schubert picture."
