Friend is a city in Saline County, Nebraska, United States. In the United States Census 2000, the city had 1174 inhabitants. The place has the Voluntary Fire Friend and a small police station with two patrol cars are equipped with radar.
Geography
The place is located on U.S. Highway 6, about 20 km south of Interstate 80, in the southeast of the county, about 65 km west- southwest of Lincoln.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.1 km ², without significant water areas. In the southeast of the urban area is a country club with a nine hole golf course, a sports complex in the south, Burley Park.
History
The town takes its name after Charles E. Friend, who had settled in Illinois coming here and its settlement Friend Ville baptized. He operated a store and a post office. Built in 1873, the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad is a train station and called the station Friend.
The National Greyhound Association was founded in 1906 in this city under its original name National Coursing Association.
Demography
At the time of the census of 2000, Friend 1174 people inhabited. The population density was 566.6 people per km ². There were 516 housing units at an average 249.0 per km ². The population Friends consisted of 98.64 % White, 0.26 % African American, 0.34 % Native American, 0 % Asian, 0 % Pacific Islander, 0 % said other races, and 0.77 % from two or more races. 0.85 % of the population to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Residents Friends distributed to 475 households out of which 29.1% were living in children under 18 years. 61.9 % married couples living together, 4.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2 % were non-families. 29.1% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 16.4 % of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size is 2.92 people.
The population was spread out with 24.8 % under the, 4.6 % 18 - to 24 -year-old, 22.1 % 25 - to 44 -year-old, 21.6% 45 - to 64 -year-olds and 26.8 % under the age 65 years or more. The average age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 89.0 males. In the over -18s accounted for 100 women, 88.7 men.
The median household income in Friend amounted to 34.833 U.S. dollars and the median family income reached the height of 40,667 U.S. dollars. The average income of men was 32,946 U.S. dollars, compared to 17,829 U.S. dollars for women.
