Frits van den Berghe

Frits van den Berghe ( born April 3, 1883 in Ghent, † September 23, 1939 ) was a Belgian painter of impressionism and expressionism.

Frits van den Berghe studied at the Art Academy of Ghent, after its completion in 1904, he moved to Sint -Martens- Latem, where he first created mainly Impressionist works. At the outbreak of World War I. van den Berghe moved to the Netherlands. Under the influence of Gustave de Smet, he developed down to Expressionism. In this phase emerged from about 1916 mainly very dark images. As van den Berghe 1922 again returned to Belgium to motifs and colors brightened again on something. The female nude became the focus of his work. In 1925 the painter lived again in his hometown of Ghent, where he again zuwendete monstrous, nightmarish designs under the influence of Surrealism.
