Fruit of the Holy Spirit

The fruit of the Holy Spirit is a term used in the New Testament. The Apostle Paul writes in his letter to the Galatians about the relationship between "flesh" and "spirit" as well as their consequences:

" 16 Therefore I say: let yourselves be guided by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh against the Spirit, the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh; both face each other as enemies, so you 're not able to do what you want. 18 But if ye will lead you by the Spirit, then you are not under the law. 19 The works of the flesh are plain: fornication, immorality, licentiousness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, selfishness, dissension, party spirit, envy 21 and envy, drunkenness, orgies, and the like more. I repeat what I have told you before: those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control; all this does not contradict the law. 24 All who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. 26 We do not brag, do not argue with each other a grudge each other. "

So there are the following nine "fruits" enumerated:

The gentleness could also be translated as gentleness.

All these features make the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Some commentators have therefore the nine properties with a bunch of grapes compared, which consists of many small grapes, but without the vine, an image of Jesus Christ, can not arise.

The tradition of the Catholic Church has twelve fruits of the Holy Spirit. There have to be added in addition to the long-suffering patience, modesty and abstinence.
